London revealed as 4x4 hotspot

London has been revealed as the hotspot when it comes to sales of 4x4 vehicles.

According to figures compiled by the information provider Experian, sales of 4x4 cars rose more sharply in the capital than in any other part of the country during the first three months of this year.

Car insurance premiums can vary for owners of 4x4s but the road taxes they are obliged to pay tend to be relatively high as policy makers are looking to discourage the use of cars that are among the biggest carbon emission culprits.

"Car buyers are more aware of the cost of running a car these days and if the rapid increase in fuel prices continues, we will see a more rapid growth in the sale of alternative fuel cars," remarked Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division.

Meanwhile, recent research by Britannia Rescue suggested that many Britons could be risking an insurance claim by running their vehicles on an empty fuel tank as the cost of petrol continues to rise.
