Britons looking to purchase home insurance may be interested to learn that the most valuable room in a house is usually the lounge, new research has discovered.

According to AXA, the average customer values their sitting room at around £2,752, which people may want to take note of when considering how much to insure their contents for.

The kitchen came in second place with an average value of £2,299.

Nick Kidd, head of household at AXA, said: "When taking out home contents insurance it's absolutely vital you have a clear idea of what your possessions cost: under-insuring could lead to your policy being invalidated."

Items such as electrical equipment, furniture and appliances are the main objects which push the value of lounges and kitchens up.

Recently, esure urged homeowners to take extra care to store their Christmas presents away carefully this year to help prevent theft.
