People could save money on their home insurance by using smoke alarms which are wired up to the mains, it has been claimed.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa), people often find that they have fewer problems when doing this.
It may also be that they are less likely to have to make an insurance claim in the event of a fire.
A spokesperson for Rospa explained that people are often tempted to take the batteries out of their smoke alarm and use them for other devices.
There are also other problems which can occur.
"Batteries can also run out, go flat and people forget to replace them," he said.
"With the mains wired ones, obviously that is not a problem."
Earlier this week, NFU Mutual stated that there has been an increase in the number of people making home insurance claims because their water pipes have burst in the icy weather.
