Maintenance work 'could help avoid home insurance claims'

Britons may find they are having to make claims on their home insurance as many are not carrying out essential maintenance work on their properties, results of a new survey have shown.

The research from Legal and General found that 21 per cent of respondents are putting off repairing a broken window or door lock while 11 per cent are ignoring faulty alarm systems.

Furthermore, even though 40 per cent of people have a burglar alarm fitted, more than half had never checked it was working properly.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications for Legal & General's general insurance business, said: "A few simple checks could mean that our properties are safer and so prevent the need to make a claim under a household insurance policy."

Jewellery and valuables insurance brokers TH March recently advised homeowners to make sure they have the contact numbers for their insurance dealers and brokers to hand in case they are urgently needed.
