Make tyre checks, avoid breakdown assistance

Easter is one of the most popular times of year for getting away from it all, so motorists will be keen to make the experience as stress free as possible.

As a result, Protyre has issued a number of tips on how to keep cars in top condition to avoid having to enlist the services of a breakdown assistance company.

Extended journeys can often prove difficult for cars to cope with, it stressed, so making checks before departing can minimise the chance of encountering a problem.

Simon Hiorns, retail director at Protyre, said: "It's easy to forget to check your tyres with all the distractions of an Easter getaway, but they are critical to the safety of your vehicle."

Tyre valves are one area of the car that are often neglected, so Protyre advised motorists to check they are not filled with dirt or anything else which may cause them to be ineffective.

Cars are also legally required to have a tyre tread depth of a minimum of 1.6mm, which is something motorists need to be aware of.

Furthermore, Protyre suggested that removing stones and other foreign objects from the tyre tread can be advantageous, as can checking pressures in line with manufacturer recommendations.

One of the primary hazards facing the country's drivers at the moment are potholes; Protyre estimates that around 300 more are located every day.

These can cause problems with wheel alignment, while also leading to uneven tyre wear, the group emphasised.

The government has announced it is to address the country's response strategies to bad weather conditions after snow and ice brought the UK to a standstill earlier this year.

It said that although its strategies worked, there are nevertheless still improvements to be made.ADNFCR-1789-ID-19697385-ADNFCR
