Instead of taking out a loan or running the risk of going on holiday without travel insurance, some Brits have found a novel way to save themselves some money.

According to National Savings and Investments (NS&I), 78 per cent of people who grow their own fruit and vegetables said that others should consider doing the same as it helps to save cash.

Nine out of ten respondents to a survey also described growing produce as being similar to saving as it requires planning ahead.

Tim Mack, head of marketing and communication at NS&I, said: "Growing your own fruit or veg is not only worthwhile but is also something that can be done almost anywhere."

Research from Fairinvestment.co.uk discovered that 18 per cent of Brits have used up more than ten per cent of their savings since the onset of the credit crunch in the UK.
