It seems as though safety-conscious motorists who like to keep their car insurance rates low think that changes should be made to laws regarding the use of mobile phones while driving.

Research conducted by esure car insurance has revealed that 41 per cent of drivers think that hands-free kits should bee banned in cars.

Although they are currently legal, 71 per cent believe they are a distraction to the driver and 48 per cent think they are needlessly putting the safety of motorists at risk.

In 2007, 2,986 people were prosecuted for failing to have proper control of their vehicle because they were distracted by using a hands-fee kit.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "Although the use of hands-free kits is legal, motorists should always ensure that they pay full attention to the road as opposed to a phone conversation."

A study for Direct Line recently discovered that the reaction times of drivers using a hands-free kit were up to 30 per cent slower than those over the drink driving limit.
