Despite the credit crunch and pressures to save money, many motorists are still using their cars to make trips of less than a kilometre on a regular basis.
This could mean that their car insurance premiums are higher as they are using their vehicle more, as well as increasing the amount of money spent on petrol.
Research by Abbey Credit Cards revealed that the 17 million motorists in the UK make an average of two journeys under a kilometre every week, while 13 per cent make six or more of these trips.
Callum Gibson, Head of Abbey Credit Cards, commented: "For some the 'guilt' in the 'guilt trips' is to do with their carbon footprint, for others, it's about the cost of making those trips."
Meanwhile, Abbey has also said that starting up a business can give people up to 120 hours a year worth of time they would normally lose from commuting.
