Some car insurance companies are now refusing to cover people who have been convicted of a mobile phone driving offence, research reveals.
A study by the AA has found that while some insurers are increasing the cost of premiums for offenders, others are simply refusing to cover them at all.
Surveying eight insurance providers, the firm discovered that car insurance premiums were increased by between 4.2 and 18.1 per cent, which the AA says reflects the seriousness of the issue.
Simon Douglas, director of AA car insurance, explained: "Driving while using a hand-held mobile telephone places you at much greater risk of having an accident and thus making an insurance claim."
Furthermore, if a driver is caught using a mobile phone, they risk losing their license or a custodial sentence.
In other news from the AA, many car insurance cover prices could be levelling out in the spring due to the recession, the organisation believes.
