'More people making claims on sports injuries'

Sports injuries caused by negligence or recklessness are increasingly becoming the grounds for personal liability insurance claims, a new survey has found.

Some people have seen a growth in the amount of action taken against them following injuries on golf courses as well as football and rugby pitches, esure home insurance said.

Although personal liability is one of the most infrequently made claims on home insurance policies, when action is taken it can be very serious, according to Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure.

Without the correct cover a case could be made against the assets of an individual with the potential for loss on their part.

"In the case of sports injuries, home contents cover may be the only safety net between an individual and a six or seven figure claim against their assets," Mr Pickard added.

This study comes after the news that one in ten Brits who own holiday homes do not have the correct insurance to protect the contents of their property, Zurich found.
