More and more holidaymakers are electing to stay in hostels when they go away, which could save them money on their travel insurance, it has been suggested.
Hostelling International has noted an increase in the popularity of hotels, believing that they are becoming trendier among travellers.
This is because they have changed from being "big dorms for school groups" and now offer single or double family rooms.
Johan Kruger, head of PR and communications at Hostelling International, said: "What many hostel managers realise is that there is an opportunity to attract more hostellers which are [not just] groups, young kids and backpackers."
Furthermore, staying in a hostel gives people the freedom to cater for themselves to keep costs down at a time when budgets may be tight.
Figures on hostel bookings released by Hostelling International reveal that the biggest increases in bookings were seen in the USA, France, Switzerland, Argentina and Belgium.
