More workers cycling to cut costs

People may find that they can keep the cost of their car insurance down by choosing to cycle to work instead of driving every day.

A new survey by Sainsbury's Home Insurance has found that around 3.3 million people, which equates to 12 per cent, of the UK's workforce are already hopping on their bikes to get to the office.

This is saving them, on average, £33.70 a week, which may come in handy as people are still feeling the effects of the credit crunch.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "Using a bicycle to travel around can be a very effective way of saving money."

However, he also warned people that it is "important to make sure that your Home Insurance policy covers your bicycle."

Last week Tesco revealed that despite money worries, some motorists are still using their cars to make "guilt trip" journeys of one kilometre or less.
