Those hoping to avoid claiming on their motorcycle insurance this summer might like to heed the advice of Norwich Union.
The bike insurance provider has warned that the summer brings more motorcycles out of the garage as 'weekend riders' come on to the roads.
However, the glare of sunshine is an additional risk, with the insurer seeing a 50 per cent hike in claims on the hottest days, compared to average days.
While motorcyclists need to take more care, there is also added responsibility for drivers who need to be aware of the increased presence on the roads.
"Checking for blindspots, being aware of bikes overtaking or undertaking and being extra careful when opening doors and pulling out are just some of the simple steps that drivers can take," advised Nigel Bartram, senior motor underwriting manager at Norwich Union.
Last month, the insurer warned that the pressures of the recession could lead to more employees spending longer times on the road - which could lead to more accidents as a result of fatigue.
