With the credit crunch to contend with, motorists may be looking to cut the cost of their car insurance.

However, insurance provider RIAS is warning drivers that insurance evasion is not the answer and could lead to a hefty fine and a criminal record.

According to the Motor Insurers Bureau, drivers who evade insurance cost law-abiding motorists around £500 million annually, increasing the cost of the average premium by £30.

RIAS managing director Janet Connor said: "There is no question that driving without insurance is both unlawful and ill-advised.

"If you are worried about the cost of insurance, it is worth talking to your insurance provider to check whether they are any savings to be made."

Motorists can help to cut the cost of their insurance by using a price comparison site and being flexible with their payment options.

According to Fool.co.uk, drivers can also save money by opting for a small car, taking a pass plus test and installing a vehicle security system.
