NHIC warns over DIY disasters

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has commented on new figures which show that one in ten over 50-year-olds have attempted to perform major DIY tasks on their property instead of calling in professional tradesmen.

The research from SAGA revealed that in many cases, people have actually injured themselves in the process, with three per cent actually needing hospital treatment following their DIY attempts.

It is likely that such botched jobs could lead to property owners having to claim on their home insurance policies to correct the mistakes.

Andrew Leech, director at the NHIC, explained that many people are capable of doing small jobs around the house such as painting but works to make major changes should be left to those with experience in the trade.

"In so far as jobs such as new baths and new kitchens, it is as well to get the expert in to do that sort of thing," he added.
