Homeowners may find they want to make sure they are properly covered by their home and car insurance policies following news that neighbourhood crime is on the increase.

According to research by LV=, 33 per cent of people in the UK claim that their neighbourhood has gotten worse since they moved there.

Around one in three respondents also said there has been an increase in the amount of street crime in their area with 28 per cent saying they do not feel safe walking along at night.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= Home Insurance, said: "This paints a bleak picture of how large parts of society view their local areas, so given this the announcement by the Government to inject £500 million into certain areas to help tackle street crime, is much needed."

Earlier this week, research from Diamond revealed that over 400,000 women have had their handbag stolen from a car in the past year.
