New students are being advised not to overload their cars when taking their possessions to university for the first time.
The Institute of Advanced Motors (IAM) has said that freshers need to make sure they are not putting themselves at risk by moving lots of books, clothes and food, often in small, second-hand cars.
"University life is fantastic; students should make sure theirs isn't postponed by keeping their car safely loaded while driving there," commented IAM.
It recommended that students make sure that vehicles are securely packed, especially as loose objects can fall into the front seats if the driver has to brake suddenly. Drivers also face prosecution if items are unsecure.
A clear view through the back window should always be maintained and loads kept as small as possible.
IAM also suggested checking tyre pressure and fuel levels as well as getting plenty of rest beforehand to remain alert for a long journey.
It is important that freshers have adequate insurance cover when they go to university for the first time as figures show that about a third of students are victims of theft, according to Norwich Union.
