As September approaches, many students are already planning their new life at university, but many could be neglecting to purchase home insurance.
home insurance provider Saga has introduced a new product aimed at students, which is available as an add-on to the current Saga home insurance policy of their parents. It is estimated that one in ten over-50s currently have a child studying at university.
Data from Saga estimates that each year one in three students will be a victim of crime at university, with a quarter of burglaries occurring as a result of an insecure window or door.
Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga, said: "For many students, making new friends and socialising will be higher on their agenda than being security conscious.
"This could make them easy targets for criminals."
The new product will offer up to £3,500 in cover and includes insurance against the theft of digital downloads.
Financial experts frequently warn students in shared accommodation to ensure they buy the correct level of home insurance.
