New weather service 'could offer better home insurance service to Brits'

A new weather facility is allowing companies which provide home insurance to Brits to offer a better service.

The Met Office has released details of how ClaimCheck, backed by computer modelling, is able to build up a detailed picture of the weather across the country at any hour.

This can be mapped to individual postcode sectors and is used to supplement the traditional observing network.

As a result, insurers are better able to manage their customers as only a postcode and date is required for ClaimCheck to provide the relevant information needed to assess claims.

Cathy Durston, head of Met Office Consulting, said: "ClaimCheck plugs the gaps in weather reports providing insurers with the same quality information as used by our forecasters."

Halifax has advised Brits to ensure that their home insurance policy is up-to-date following the adverse weather recently experienced by the UK.
