Newlyweds urged to update home contents insurance

Newlyweds are being encouraged to ensure their home contents insurance is up to date as they can often gain thousands of pounds worth of possessions once they have tied the knot.

According to Direct Line, wedding guests spend an average of £79 when buying a gift for the happy couple.

Therefore, a celebration attended by 50 people could result in up to £3,950 worth of presents which need to be covered by contents insurance.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said that as the costs of wedding dresses, flowers and preparations for the big day mount up, "it will be a shrewd newlywed who checks their insurance policy to make sure that all of their purchases and gifts are protected in the event of loss, damage, or theft".

Following the theft of politician David Cameron's bike recently, AA Insurance urged people to make sure their contents insurance covers items when they are not in the home.
