One-fifth of students have left the door unlocked, study shows

Research from Newcastle Building Society has revealed that 18 per cent of students have left their home without locking the door.

It is worrying that a very similar percentage of people of university age do not have home contents insurance, Wendy Lee, commercial director at Newcastle Building Society said.

Despite a large proportion of students not having contents insurance, the study revealed that 35 per cent of them have gone out and left windows unlocked.

When both new and returning students head to university next month Ms Lee has advised that they think long and hard about home contents insurance as well as their studies.

"It stands to reason that leaving your home without locking the doors or setting the alarm creates a risk for burglary but it can also affect your home contents cover should you come to claim," she said.

According to Home Office research, around 20 per cent of burglaries occur without force with the criminals entering the property through an open window or unlocked door.
