As the financial strain of the credit crunch continues new research has shown that many Britons are not sure where their money is going and do not know what some aspects of their bills mean.
According to Fool.co.uk, one in 20 people do not understand their bills while a further six per cent never study them.
Around half of those questioned said they had a rough idea of what their quarterly invoice means and 33 per cent said they take a detailed look at their bill.
David Kuo, head of personal finance at Fool.co.uk, said: "Scrutinising quarterly gas and electricity bills is the first important step to saving money on utilities."
He also added that "comparing your bills with similar houses in your neighborhood could identify if your home is energy efficient".
In related news, fuel poverty now affects 5.4 million UK households, according to National Energy Action.
