New research has shown that many people aged over 50 choosing to buy a second hand car will make a decision based on how many miles to the gallon it has done, which could help to lower the cost of their car insurance.
Around 32 per cent of people said they were no longer bothered about the make, model or colour and were more concerned about how economical the car was, research by RIAS revealed.
Only four per cent said the age of the car was an issue and five per cent said they cared about the engine size.
RIAS managing director Janet Connor said that many people are worried about the coast of keeping a car.
However, she warned that "however many miles to the gallon a car does, and whatever make, model or colour is chosen, making sure you're properly covered with appropriate car insurance is a non-negotiable part of driving a car".
According to Sainsbury's motorists purchasing a new car could save themselves and average of £1,468 if they haggled with the dealer.
