New research shows that more than 50 per cent of homeowners in the UK have fitted some form of additional security during the last year.
The statistics from Halifax Home Insurance also show that a quarter of those surveyed plan to make a similar move in 2009 with 20 per cent of those surveyed having been a victim of burglary.
Over half of the 2,089 respondents in the survey have installed extra security measures such as burglar alarms and window locks.
David Rochester of Halifax Home Insurance claimed that burglar alarms, window locks and door chains are "all great deterrents".
"Our homes and contents are very valuable to us and all steps to protect them should be taken. The harder we make it for the thief to gain entry the better," he added.
Statistics also show that homeowners are four times less likely to be a victim of burglary if they have a security alarm fitted, according to easyalarms.co.uk.
