Parents urged to insure student's possessions

Parents need to remind their children who are going to university not to forget about home insurance, Nationwide Building Society says.

The average student has over £1,500 worth of possessions including DVD players, televisions, stereos and games consoles. It is advisable that these contents are insured while being kept in student accommodation.

By ensuring that items are protected by their own insurance policy, parents can avoid having to pay extra for cover or to replace them in the event of theft.

Robin Bailey, Nationwide's insurance director, said that university can be a very costly time for parents.

"Student policies can be expensive but, if cover is provided under their own policy, parents can make sure their child's possessions are insured while in their student accommodation without extra cost," he added.

A similar warning has also been issued by Sainsbury's which recently revealed that 25 per cent of home insurance policies do not cover their children's possessions while they are at university.
