Parties held by children cause £16.8 million worth of damage to parents' homes every year, new research has shown.
Following the release of GCSE and A-Level results this month, many teenagers see now as an ideal time to throw a party, usually in their parents' beloved home, according to Sainsbury's Home Insurance.
Research has also shown that 54,000 parties are held each year in the family home without permission, causing up to £1.4 million in damages.
Sainsbury's Home Insurance has warned that homeowners may not be fully covered by their Home Insurance if their children host parties and use social networking sites to distribute invitations.
Neil Laird, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said that the rise of sites such as Facebook and Bebo has "dramatically changed" how teenagers invite people to their parties".
"It's not uncommon to have parties with many hundreds of people attending and when such events get out of hand some insurers may suggest that the homeowner failed to take due care of the property," he added.
In May, a £4.4 million mansion in Marbella was wrecked after Facebook and Bebo were used to invite 400 teenagers to a party.
