Passport loss 'a fact of life' for many travellers

Thousands of people lose their passports every year for a variety of reasons, figures from the Identity and Passport Service have revealed.

More than 10,000 are thrown out in the rubbish every year, while others are lost overseas, emphasising the need for comprehensive travel insurance.

Some of the more unusual excuses for losing the document include it falling out of a bag while snowboarding, and it being misplaced while in prison.

"It will cost you at least £77.50 to replace, so it's really important that you keep it safe both when you are at home and when you’re abroad," commented Sarah Rapson, chief executive of the Identity and Passport Service.

Research from Lloyds TSB recently revealed that 34 per cent of Brits have taken days off between Easter, the royal wedding and May Day, giving them ample opportunity to take a holiday overseas.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800514937-ADNFCR
