The penalties that are currently imposed on drivers that get behind the wheel without insurance are not stopping everyone, it has been reported.
Andrew Howard, head of road safety for the AA, said that despite the significant number of car confiscations and crushings there are still people willing to flout the law.
Figures from the Motor Insurance Bureau indicate that seizures of uninsured vehicles were up to 150,000 last year.
Mr Howard stated that it all depends on "how far outside the law you are prepared to live".
The head of road safety declared that the courts have "eventually got to finally sit there and impose a realistic penalty" on vehicle insurance offences.
In August, Direct Line claimed that accidents involving uninsured drivers result in the loss of around 200 lives every year.
The insurer also found that five per cent of all drivers are uninsured.
