Many drivers are failing to realise the amount of alcohol they are drinking before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, risking their car insurance, licence and even lives, a new survey shows.
Research conducted by breathalyser manufacturer AlcoSense discovered that 96 per cent of respondents underestimated the number of units in a pint of lager and 97 per cent underestimated the number in a glass of wine.
A glass of six per cent ABV lager and a 13 per cent ABV 250 ml measure of wine both contain 3.4 units. However, most people estimated the drinks contained just two units - something that could mean they could be unintentionally driving while under the influence.
Hunter Abbott, chief executive officer of AlcoSense, said: "This is worrying for the evening, but even more worrying for the morning after as people are vastly underestimating just how much alcohol they have consumed."
As well as putting lives at risk, drivers convicted of drink driving could face a driving ban and increased car insurance premiums.
The government has recently launched a new £1.5 million campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of summer drinking and driving.
