Home insurance or contents cover may be some of the policies most people ensure they have in place to protect their belongings.
However, there has been a rise in the number of people failing to protect their floating houses with boat insurance, Zurich has claimed.
According to the company, there are increasing incidences of boat theft occurring and people are losing out over the winter months as a result.
This is because many think their vessel is not at risk in the cold weather as it is not being used.
Therefore they try to save themselves some money by not insuring it for a few months until spring arrives.
James Roberts, head of Navigators & General, said: "With boat theft increasing by a fifth this year, we wanted to warn boat owners to try and minimise temptation to opportunist thieves by removing items from their boat, where possible."
Car insurance may also be an essential purchase over the winter months due to the risk of accidents on icy roads.
