Many large van insurance policies could be at risk because of poor maintenance, reveals new figures.
The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) has highlighted that large vans have the lowest MOT pass rate of any vehicle on the country's roads. The federation is calling for drivers to realise the importance of correctly maintaining their vans in order to ensure they avoid unnecessary accidents - which could push up van insurance premiums.
According to statistics published by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency, commercial vehicles weighing between 3,000 kg and 3,500 kg had the worst pass rate, with a failure rate of 44.7 per cent - higher than the 35.3 per cent rate for cars and small vans.
Stephen Coles, head of the RMIF's MOT technical operations, commented: "With such a high MOT failure rate, it is clear that very little maintenance work is being performed on these vehicles. Their owners may not realise that prevention could be cheaper than cure in the long run."
Meanwhile, drivers are being reminded by provider Aviva to make sure their car insurance policies cover them for travelling abroad if they are planning a trip to Europe this summer.
