Properties at risk when cold temperatures subside

Homeowners need to be aware that their properties may be at risk once the freezing temperatures start to subside, Hiscox has warned.

Leaks caused by burst pipes are one of the most prevalent issues, it revealed, which could lead people to make claims on their home insurance.

"There is still a long winter ahead, however as the cold snap ends and there are slightly higher temperatures, frozen pipes will begin to thaw," Austyn Tusler, home insurance expert at Hiscox suggested.

If a leak goes untreated for a long time, it may become worse and enter the house, causing no end of damage to electrical items and other parts of the home.

Earlier this month, NFU Mutual revealed that rural areas in particular are at risk of freezing pipes causing damage to their properties.

It warned that large amounts of snow on the roof of a structure could also cause no end of problems.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800271737-ADNFCR
