People may find they can save money on their car insurance by making sure they are looking after car to help to avoid accidents this winter.

Over 1,000 road accidents a year are caused by defective tyres, according to Tyresafe, and drivers could lose their no claims bonuses on their insurance premium if they are involved in one.

RIAS managing director Janet Connor said: "It's vitally important, especially in winter when conditions are worse, to encourage drivers to think more carefully about those small and inexpensive checks that could help save lives."

The insurance firm also says that tyres should be properly inflated, engine fluids topped up and mirrors and windows checked for dirt and cracks.

In a related poll, esure found that one million Brits have crashed their car or made a dangerous manoeuvre because they forgot to turn their headlights on.
