Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has decided to raise the price of its utility bills, which will put further strain on household finances.
Consumer Focus explained that the 18 per cent rise for gas and 11 per cent for electricity will mean that more people are at risk of living in fuel poverty.
Chief executive Mike O'Connor explained: "Currently consumers cannot tell whether these increases are justified and that stokes the lack of trust in energy firms. Suppliers point to rising wholesale costs."
He emphasised that although wholesale prices have risen slightly, they are still lower than their 2008 peak.
Consumer Focus is pushing for Ofgem to take action against energy suppliers that cannot justify their price rises in order to secure a better deal for consumers.
It also believes an end should be put to doorstep energy sales, and the complex and confusing tariffs which prevent people from going in search of a better deal. |
