There has been a rise in the number of home insurance claims following water damage to houses in recent weeks, it has been revealed.

Sainsbury's home insurance has identified over 13,000 claims for water damage, the value of which is estimated to be around £27.56 million.

The organisation urges people to ensure they have a good level of contents cover and leave the heating on a low setting if they go away for a few days as this keeps the air temperature up.

Neil Laird, Sainsbury's home insurance manager, said: "There have certainly been more home insurance claims linked to water damage in recent weeks than we'd expect to see when the weather is milder."

He warned that there may be more home insurance claims to come as it is expected that temperatures will drop lower.

More Than recently warned homeowners that there as been an increase in the number of domestic burglaries in the UK.
