People who like to save their pennies and shop around for car insurance may also want to take their own snacks and drinks with them should they be off on a long drive this bank holiday weekend.
This is because, as figures released by Which? Car show, prices for food and drink in motorway service stations can be far higher than those in a local supermarket.
After visiting 51 sites around the UK, the magazine discovered that bottles of water are being sold for four times the amount they would in a normal shop.
A cappuccino was found to cost £2.99 and diesel was priced at 13p more per litre than at a non-motorway garage.
Richard Headland, editor of Which? Car, said: "By all means stop at a motorway service station to use the toilets or have a break from driving, but remember they don't always offer value for money."
Meanwhile, Saga recently warned drivers that car insurance will not cover their caravan as well.
