Sheffield flood homes 'at risk with no insurance'

Despite many residents of Sheffield being hit by floods 18 months ago, many do not have the correct home insurance to protect their possessions, it has emerged.

Research by housing management company Sheffield Homes found that only nine per cent of residents in its 42,000 properties had proper cover.

A further 81 per cent of social rented tenants had no savings and 16 per cent did not have a bank account, even though it means they will have to pay charges to cash cheques.

A report by Sheffield Homes stated: "The impact of this is that a lack of insurance and savings makes families vulnerable to financial crises following unexpected events such as burglary or flooding."

The British Insurance Brokers Association recently claimed that in order for them to provide proper insurance for those homes at risk of flooding, the government would have to take steps to better protect houses.
