Figures show many people are moving away from purchasing smaller used vehicles, despite the fact it may be cheaper to protect them with car insurance.
According to Experian's research into used car sales, across the UK, purchases within the sector fell by 8.5 per cent during the final three months of 2008.
Sales of smaller cars in particular seemed to be declining, as compared to the fourth quarter of 2007, sales of minis were down by 8.2 per cent.
Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division, said that the latest used car statistics show that despite a focus on smaller, more economical vehicles, "the fall in sales for the used supermini and mini segments were still on a par with, for example, the upper medium and the sports segments".
As well as car insurance being cheaper for smaller motors, it may also cost less for women, as the Guild of Experienced Motorists said they take fewer risks than men when driving.
