Stay safe as houses, Brits urged

Brits, particularly older people and students, are being urged to protect themselves from distraction burglars and avoid making home insurance claims.

The Home Office has launched a national campaign, led by The Bill star Graham Cole, to warn against criminals who deceive people in order to steal.

They often pose as utility company workers to trick their way into a victim's home, with around 9,000 such incidents taking place each year.

It is using role play classes to raise awareness and offering face-to-face advice and Secure Your Home packs at road shows across the country.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell points out that burglary has fallen 54 per cent since 1997, but the recession could see this type of crime increase.

"It is vital people remember to check the identity of any stranger who calls at their home, genuine callers will not mind waiting," he said.

"The most important piece of advice anytime someone knocks on your door is if in doubt keep them out," added Mr Cole, who played PC Tony Stamp in The Bill.

Police advise people to keep doors locked and use a door chain to help prevent doorstep visitors from pushing their way in.

Check the identification of the caller if unsure of their legitimacy, cross-referencing their name and the phone number for the organisation they say they are part of with directory enquiries.

Many utilities suppliers operate a password system so consumers can be sure the person knocking on their door is who they say they are.

If you think you have been targeted tell a friend, neighbour, Neighbourhood Watch representative and the police.

It is important for everyone to have contents insurance to cover their belongings, and older people and students should ensure they do not let their guard down and overlook this.

The value of items such as jewellery and antiques, laptops and digital cameras, make home insurance a worthwhile expense.

Taking out home insurance gives that extra safety net should a burglary take place, the site added.
