Students advised to shop around for car insurance

The forthcoming start of the new university term means that many students will be looking forward to living away from home for the first time.

However, those planning to take their cars with them are being advised to shop around to get the best car insurance deal because their premiums are likely to rise, claims Moneyextra.com.

In particular, students are being reminded to inform their car insurance provider about their new living arrangements, which could include having to park their vehicle on the road - a move that could push up insurance costs.

However, investing in extra security such as a steering lock could lower quotes.

It is also important to make sure that the car is registered to the correct party. In some cases, students attempt to save money by putting themselves as a named driver on a parent's car insurance policy.

However, this is illegal and could lead to prosecution.

The government recently launched a new media campaign to highlight the dangers of drug-driving and raise awareness of the risks amongst car insurance customers.
