Many students do not appreciate the need for contents insurance when they head off to university, despite the high worth of their belongings, an expert believes.
Not all home insurance policies will cover items taken outside the home, which may call for another product to be taken out.
However, John Baker, head of general insurance at Nationwide, reveals that students are largely unconcerned about whether their possessions are protected or not.
He explained: "Unfortunately, the statistics show that around 15 per cent of students have experienced something being stolen from them while they were at university."
Many university-goers admitted that they had not got round to sorting out contents insurance, while a large proportion believed that they were not likely to have anything stolen from them.
This follows research from Nationwide that showed around 40 per cent of students will take items away to university with them worth well over £500. |
