An insurance expert has said that students do not think to take out insurance on their personal belongings.

Recent research by Halifax claimed that the average student in the UK spends around £74.70 per week on accommodation.

Added to this, the study found that those at university also spend an additional £109 per week on items such as food and drink as well as transport, books and leisure pursuits.

In response to this data, Philip Suter of jml-insurance.co.uk said that student tenants tend not to spend any more money on contents insurance while they are away at university.

"Many students' attitude would be that their computer or bike would never be stolen so why take out insurance," he added.

Mr Suter claimed that the most commonly stolen items are laptops and other expensive electrical items.

A recent survey by Endsleigh found that the average student's belongings total a cash value of £4,512.
