Students reminded about 'need for home insurance'

With the start of a new university term approaching, students are being advised to make sure their belongings are covered by home insurance.

Freshers moving into student accommodation can often be distracted by events at the student union and meeting new people to consider the practical side of leaving home but this could prove costly in the long run, reports MyFinances.co.uk.

Data from 2008's Crime in England and Wales report concluded that full time students are twice as likely to be burgled so therefore it is vital to take out home insurance to cover expensive items such as laptops and iPods.

Students moving into shared accommodation are also being advised to make sure their policy is suitable for such living arrangements and they may need to invest in both external and internal door locks.

Elaine Parks, head of technical services for Legal & General insurance, explained: "Students in shared accommodation should not assume that they will be covered.

"Most household insurance policies will only accept a claim if it is clear that force was used to gain entry to the room."

A recent study from Defaqto revealed that home insurance customers may have to shop around for the best priced cover as providers increase the level of excess on a number of policies to help recover costs.
