Many Brits have secret credit cards or may have existing debt from previous loans which they have kept hidden from their partner, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by Halifax shows that there are around 217,000 secret cards in the UK, although this only represents around one per cent of the population.

These sneaky rectangles of plastic were mostly used to purchase things such as holidays and electrical goods.

The company advised people that there is a good practical reason to tell the truth about their monetary situation.

Adrian Bryant, head of marketing for Halifax Credit Cards, said: "It's important that people are honest about their finances with their partner as it may affect their ability to secure products in joint names."

In recent times, Halifax revealed that there has been an increase in the number of Brits who feel they are at risk of being burgled.
