Sustainability 'is not a major concern of home buyers'

Sustainability may be high on the agenda for the government, but the majority of property buyers do not see it as a major concern, home insurance customers have been told.

Independent property expert Malcolm Harrison said with older properties, there is often very little home insurance policyholders can do about the efficiency of their buildings.

"It is a tricky issue, but when it comes to homes, people just see what they want and if that is where they would feel they would like to live and whether they can afford to live there," he went on to say.

This month, Building.co.uk claimed that the Treasury is set to give homeowners stamp duty incentives in the next Budget in order to help fund the cost of retrofitting their properties under the Green Deal.

It is not known, however, if the changes will take the form of penalties for poor performers or tax cuts for the best performers.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800446786-ADNFCR
