British tourists may be looking to cut costs and save money on their travel insurance as it is likely that they will holidaying in the UK during the recession, it has been suggested.
The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) claims that people are "scaling back" and are considering replacing one of their holidays abroad with a break in the country.
Similarly, those from other countries may now be starting to consider the UK as an attractive holiday destination.
Ian Bradley, public relations officer at AITO, said: "The dollar has become a lot stronger compared to the pound, so the UK is looking a little more attractive now for Americans."
He also added that an increasing number of airlines flying into the UK is helping to increase tourism.
According to research carried out by ebookers.com, over half of those surveyed consider taking a holiday to be important or absolutely necessary.
