Car insurance premiums could be reduced by the introduction of a telematics box, which tells insurance companies exactly where and how people are driving from second to second. The device, which is already used by businesses in the logistics sector by law, could be a useful tool in promoting safe road practices in return for cheap insurance, the Daily Mail reported. Insurance companies will be given information on whether drivers brake sharply or accelerate aggressively, allowing them to calculate the road risk individual motorists pose. For safe drivers the device will be useful in driving down costs, which have escalated over recent years as a result of the compensation culture that has emerged. Women may be particularly tempted to invest in a telematics system, after the European Court of Justice ruled that gender cannot be used as a deciding factor by insurance companies. Females statistically are less likely to be involved in a road collision than men, who make up to 92 per cent of all driving convictions. |
