Homeowners have been advised not to leave keys hidden under plant pots if they do not want to make a claim on their home insurance.
Following statistics which reveal London to be the biggest burglary hotspot in the UK, Halifax has issued some tips on how people can make their properties more secure.
Brits are also advised to keep their valuables out of sight while windows and doors should be fitted with locks which must remain closed on the ground floor.
To help with any contents insurance enquiries should a burglary take place, it is a good idea to keep receipts of items as it can help the smooth running of the claim.
Halifax senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "We'd recommend householders take a few moments before they leave the house and before going to bed, to make sure valuables are out of sight."
