Toy van 'stresses need for home insurance'

A one-off Dinky toy has been sold at auction for £6,400 and highlights the importance of ensuring that people have home insurance cover that takes account of unusual valuables.

The Austin A40 van is believed to be the only one in the world and was a promotional item made for a sports store in El Salvador.

Wallis & Wallis Auction House in Lewes, East Sussex, handled the sale of the toy and auctioneer Glenn Butler explained that the van's value was not fully realised until experts had been called in to give a valuation.

"The chances of this happening are incredibly slim - it's like somebody finding a Constable painting that wasn't known to exist before," explained Mr Butler to BBC News.

The Dinky van was eventually sold to an anonymous telephone bidder.
Halifax home insurance recently highlighted that many people in the UK have undervalued their home insurance cover, with three out of five people not seeking expert valuations on potential antiques and collectables.
