Travel insurance may cover those affected by Hurricane Irene

Holidaymakers whose plans have been affected by Hurricane Irene may find their travel insurance provider will pay out for the disruption, one expert has said.

Sean Tipton, senior press officer at Abta - the Travel Association, explained that it will largely depend on the type of holiday people have booked and how they went about doing it.

"People on package holidays whose flights were already sold but were unable to travel to New York would have been given the option to transfer to a later holiday or have a full refund," he noted.

Mr Tipton suggested that travellers who had made their own arrangements should also be in the same situation, although there may be cancellation charges for accommodation.

These may or may not be covered by travel insurance policies, although this largely depends on the type of cover people have taken out.

In some cases, travel insurance companies will cover delays caused by bad weather, but will pay a set amount rather than the full expenses incurred, Mr Tipton added.ADNFCR-1789-ID-800716766-ADNFCR
